the control and information service provided to aircraft operators, both in the airport airspace and en-route. In controlled airspace it is the control authority, co-ordinating aircraft routes to ensures that aircraft are adequately separated in-flight. In uncontrolled airspace, or in open FIR, it is primarily an information giving function or role. It does not give route direction to pilots but it will respond to their requests for information.
