special visceral efferent column A column of gray matter in the hindbrain of the embryo, represented in the adult by the trigeminal and facial nuclei and the nucleus ambiguus.
(05 Mar 2000)
special visceral efferent nuclei Collective term for those motoneuronal nuclei of the brainstem (n. Ambiguus, facial motor nucleus, motor nucleus of the trigeminus) that develop from the branchiomotor column of the embryo and innervate striated muscle fibres (muscles of mastication, facial musculature, pharynx and vocal cord muscles) developed from the mesenchyme of the branchial arches.
Synonym: special visceral efferent nuclei, special visceral motor nuclei.
(05 Mar 2000)
first visceral cleft <anatomy> The cleft between the hyoid and mandibular arches of the embryo; the external auditory meatus is developed from its dorsal portion.
Synonym: first visceral cleft.
(05 Mar 2000)
larva migrans, visceral A condition produced in man by the prolonged migration of animal nematode larvae in extraintestinal tissues other than skin; characterised by persistent hypereosinophilia, hepatomegaly, and frequently pneumonitis, commonly caused by toxocara canis and toxocara cati.
(12 Dec 1998)
leishmaniasis, visceral A chronic disease caused by leishmania donovani and transmitted by the bite of several sandflies of the genera phlebotomus and lutzomyia. It is commonly characterised by fever, chills, vomiting, anaemia, hepatosplenomegaly, leukopenia, hypergammaglobulinaemia, emaciation, and an earth-gray colour of the skin. The disease is classified into three main types according to geographic distribution: indian, mediterranean (or infantile), and african.

autonomic motor neuron See: motor neuron.
(05 Mar 2000)
autonomic motor neurons (preganglionic neuron's), by contrast, innervate smooth muscle fibres or glands only by the intermediary of a second, peripheral, neuron (postganglionic or ganglionic m. Neuron) located in an autonomic ganglion.
See: motor endplate, autonomic nervous system.
Synonym: anterior horn cell, motoneuron.
(05 Mar 2000)
Bender Visual Motor Gestalt test <psychology> A psychological test used by neurologists and clinical psychologists to measure a person's ability to visually copy a set of geometric designs.
It consists of nine geometric designs on cards. The subject is asked to redraw them from memory after each one is presented individually. It is useful for measuring visuospatial and visuomotor coordination to detect brain damage.
Synonym: Bender Visual Motor Gestalt test.
(14 Aug 2000)
gamma motor neurons The reflex arc consisting of small anterior horn cells and neuroma, their small fibres projecting to the intrafusal bundle producing its contraction, which initiates the afferent impulses that pass through the posterior root to the anterior horn cells, inducing a stretch reflex.
Synonym: gamma motor neurons, gamma motor system, Granit's loop.
(05 Mar 2000)
gamma motor system The reflex arc consisting of small anterior horn cells and neuroma, their small fibres projecting to the intrafusal bundle producing its contraction, which initiates the afferent impulses that pass through the posterior root to the anterior horn cells, inducing a stretch reflex.
Synonym: gamma motor neurons, gamma motor system, Granit's loop.
