superior vestibular area The area in the fundus of the internal acoustic meatus superior to the transverse crest through which the superior part of the vestibular nerve passes to reach the macula utriculus and the ampullae of the anterior and lateral saemicircular ducts.
Synonym: area vestibularis superior.
(05 Mar 2000)
superior vestibular nucleus One of a group of four main nuclei that includes: the lateral vestibular nucleus (Deiters' nucleus), medial vestibular nucleus (Schwalbe's nucleus), superior vestibular nucleus (Bechterew's nucleus), and inferior vestibular nucleus, located in the lateral region of the hindbrain beneath the floor of the rhomboid fossa. They receive primary fibres of the vestibular nerve, are reciprocally connected with the flocculonodular lobe of the cerebellum, and project by way of the medial longitudinal fasciculus to the abducens, trochlear, and oculomotor nuclei and to the ventral horn of the spinal cord. The lateral vestibular nucleus projects to the ipsilateral ventral horn of the spinal cord by the vestibulospinal tract.
Synonym: nucleus vestibularis.
(05 Mar 2000)
inferior part of vestibular ganglion The lower part of the vestibular ganglion that receives fibres from the macula of the saccule and the ampulla of the posterior saemicircular duct.
Synonym: pars inferior ganglii vestibularis.
(05 Mar 2000)
inferior vestibular area The area of the fundus of the internal acoustic meatus inferior to the transverse crest through which the interior portion of the vestibular (saccular) nerve passes.
Synonym: area vestibularis inferior.
(05 Mar 2000)
inferior vestibular nucleus Nucleus vestibularis inferior.
See: vestibular nucleus.
(05 Mar 2000)
intermediate part of vestibular bulb A narrow median band that connects the two masses of erectile tissue (the bulbus vestibuli) on either side of the vaginal orifice.
Synonym: pars intermedia commissura bulborum, commissura bulborum, intermediate part of vestibular bulb, pars intermedia bulborum.
(05 Mar 2000)
external aperture of vestibular aqueduct The external opening of the vestibular aqueduct on the posterior surface of the petrous part of the temporal bone near the groove for the sigmoid sinus.
Synonym: apertura externa aqueductus vestibuli.
(05 Mar 2000)
lateral vestibular nucleus Nucleus vestibularis lateralis.
See: vestibular nucleus.
(05 Mar 2000)
lesser vestibular glands A number of minute mucous glands opening on the surface of the vestibule between the orifices of the vagina and urethra.
Synonym: glandulae vestibulares minores.
(05 Mar 2000)
little fossa of the vestibular window A depression on the medial wall of the middle ear which has the fenestra vestibulae (oval window) in its lower portion.
Synonym: Huguier's sinus, little fossa of the vestibular window, little fossa of the vestibular round window.
(05 Mar 2000)
accelerated reaction A response occurring in a shorter time than expected; the cutaneous manifestations occurring during the period between the second and tenth day following smallpox vaccination; because it is intermediate between a primary reaction and an immediate reaction, it is regarded as evidence of some degree of resistance.
Synonym: vaccinoid reaction.
(05 Mar 2000)
acid reaction Any test by which an acid reaction is recognised such as the change of blue litmus paper to red, an excess of hydrogen ions over hydroxide ions in aqueous solution indicated by a pH value less than 7 (at 22°C).
Compare: dissociation constant of water.
(05 Mar 2000)
acute-phase reaction <immunology, rheumatology> Refers to the changes in synthesis of certain proteins within the serum during an inflammatory response, which provides rapid protection for the host against microorganisms via non-specific defense mechanisms.
It consists of fever, an increase in inflammatory humoral factors, and an increased synthesis by hepatocytes of a number of proteins or glycoproteins usually found in the plasma; the reaction is mediated by endogenous pyrogens, the hypothalamus, adrenal hormones, and other factors.
(12 Jul 2000)
acute situational reaction An acute emotional reaction related to extreme environmental stress.
Synonym: acute situational reaction.
(05 Mar 2000)
