vertical Vertical literally means at right angles to the plane of the horizon. In metrology this is altered to state that it is in the direction of the pull of gravity. Horizontal is any line or plane at right angles to the vertical axis. For convenience, the X and Y axes are usually considered to be in the horizontal plane and the Z axis in the vertical.
