ganglion of facial nerve The sensory ganglion of the facial (7th cranial) nerve. The geniculate ganglion cells send central processes to the brainstem and peripheral processes to the taste buds in the anterior tongue, the soft palate, and the skin of the external auditory meatus and the mastoid process.
(12 Dec 1998)
velo-cardio-facial syndrome <syndrome> Also known as shprintzen syndrome, this more than is a congenital malformation (birth defect) syndrome with cleft palate, heart defect, abnormal face, and learning problems. The condition is therefore called the velo-cardio-facial (vcf) syndrome. (the velum is the soft palate). Other less frequent features include short stature, small-than-normal head (microcephaly), mental retardation, minor ear anomalies, slender hands and digits, and inguinal hernia. The cause is usually a microdeletion in chromosome band 22q11.2, just as in digeorge syndrome. Vcf and digeorge syndromes are different clinical expressions of essentially the same chromosome defect. Of essentially the same chromosome defect.
(12 Dec 1998)
geniculum of facial canal The bend in the facial canal linking the medial and lateral crura of the horizontal port of the canal and corresponding to the location of the geniculate ganglion of the facial nerve.
Synonym: geniculum canalis facialis.
(05 Mar 2000)
geniculum of facial nerve <anatomy, nerve> A rectangular bend of the facial nerve in the facial canal where it turns posterior in the medial wall of the middle ear (external geniculum), complex loop of facial nerve fibres around the abducens nucleus (internal geniculum).
Synonym: geniculum nervi facialis.
(05 Mar 2000)
marginal mandibular branch of facial nerve <anatomy, nerve> Branch of facial nerve which parallels the mandibular margin innervating risorius muscle and muscles of lower lip and chin.
Synonym: ramus marginalis mandibulae nervi facialis.
(05 Mar 2000)
genu of facial canal A sharp bend in the facial canal where the geniculate ganglion is located.
(05 Mar 2000)
genu of facial nerve <anatomy, nerve> The curve which the fibres of the root of the facial nerve describe around the abducens nucleus in the pontine tegmentum; the internal genu of the facial nerve.
Synonym: genu nervi facialis.
(05 Mar 2000)
glandular branches of facial artery <anatomy, artery> Branches of facial artery to the submandibular gland.
Synonym: rami glandulares arteriae facialis.
(05 Mar 2000)

medial crus of the horizontal part of the facial canal Medially-placed, anteriorly-directed first portion of the horizontal part of the facial canal.
See: horizontal part of facial canal.
Synonym: medial crus of the horizontal part of the facial canal.
(05 Mar 2000)
cervical branch of facial nerve <anatomy, nerve> The most inferior branch of the parotid plexus of the facial nerve, it descends to innervate the platysma muscle.
Synonym: ramus colli nervi facialis, ramus cervicalis nervi facialis.
(05 Mar 2000)
peripheral facial paralysis A condition that involves the facial nerve (VII cranial nerve) and results in the paralysis of one side of the face. Bell's (facial nerve palsy) can be differentiated from a central (stroke) deficit by the inability to raise the eyebrow on the affected side.
(27 Sep 1997)
root of facial nerve <anatomy, nerve> Fibres running from the facial motor nucleus upward to the facial colliculus where they curve around the abducens nucleus and then pass peripherally between the superior olive and sensory nucleus of the trigeminal, to emerge as the facial nerve from the pontomedullary groove.
Synonym: radix nervi facialis.
(05 Mar 2000)
common facial vein <anatomy, vein> A short vessel formed by the union of the facial vein and the retromandibular vein, emptying into the jugular vein; considered to be a continuation of the facial vein in the NA.
Synonym: vena facialis communis.
