| tympanic lip of limbus of spiral lamina | The lower, long periosteal extension of the limbus laminae spiralis osseae that rests on the basilar lamina of the spiral organ (of Corti). Synonym: labium limbi tympanicum laminae spiralis, tympanic lip of limbus of spiral lamina. Labium urethrae, one of the two lateral margins of the external urethral orifice of the female. | tympanic membrane | <anatomy> The eardrum. (13 Nov 1997) |
| tympanic membrane perforation | An opening in the tympanic membrane usually caused by trauma. There are four general categories: compression injuries (the most common and usually the result of a blow to the ear); instrumentation injuries (the second most common, usually inadvertent, caused often by cotton swabs or bobby-pins); burn-slag injuries (frequently seen in industry, from hot metal from machines or welding); and blast injuries (usually seen during war or as a result of terrorist bombing). In the absence of infection, most traumatic tympanic membrane perforations heal spontaneously. Persistent perforation is usually a manifestation of tubotympanitis, an inflammation of the eustachian tube and tympanic cavity (middle ear). (12 Dec 1998) |
| tympanic nerve | <anatomy, nerve> A nerve from the inferior ganglion of the glossopharyngeal nerve, passing through the tympanic canaliculus to the tympanic cavity, forming there the tympanic plexus which supplies the mucous membrane of the tympanic cavity, mastoid cells, and auditory tube; presynaptic parasympathetic fibres also pass through the tympanic nerve via the lesser superficial petrosal nerve to the otic ganglion, where they synapse with postsynaptic fibres that continue to supply the parotid gland. Synonym: nervus tympanicus, Andersch's nerve, Jacobson's nerve. (05 Mar 2000) |
| tympanic notch | The notch in the superior part of the tympanic ring bridged by the flaccid part of the tympanic membrane. Synonym: incisura tympanica, incisura rivini, Rivinus' incisure, Rivinus' notch, tympanic incisure. (05 Mar 2000) |
| tympanic opening of auditory tube | An opening in the anterior part of the tympanic cavity below the canal for the tensor tympani muscle. Synonym: ostium tympanicum tubae auditivae, tympanic opening of eustachian tube. (05 Mar 2000) |
| tympanic opening of canaliculi for chorda tympani | The small canal opening found lateral to the pyramidal eminence in the posterior wall of the middle ear cavity from which the chorda tympani nerve emerges to pass anteriorly between the ossicles accompanied by a branch of the stylomastoid artery. Synonym: apertura tympanica canaliculi chordae tympani. (05 Mar 2000) |
| tympanic opening of eustachian tube | An opening in the anterior part of the tympanic cavity below the canal for the tensor tympani muscle. Synonym: ostium tympanicum tubae auditivae, tympanic opening of eustachian tube. (05 Mar 2000) |
| tympanic part of temporal bone | The bony plate forming the greater part of the anterior wall of the bony part of the external acoustic meatus and the tympanic cavity and the posterior wall of the mandibular fossa. Synonym: pars tympanica ossis temporalis, tympanic part of temporal bone. (05 Mar 2000) |
| tympanic plate of temporal bone | The bony plate forming the greater part of the anterior wall of the bony part of the external acoustic meatus and the tympanic cavity and the posterior wall of the mandibular fossa. Synonym: pars tympanica ossis temporalis, tympanic part of temporal bone. (05 Mar 2000) |
| tympanic plexus | A plexus on the promontory of the labyrinthine wall of the tympanic cavity, formed by the tympanic nerve, an anastomotic branch of the facial, and sympathetic branches from the internal carotid plexus; it supplies the mucosa of the middle ear, mastoid cells, and auditory (eustachian) tube, and gives off the lesser superficial petrosal nerve to the otic ganglion. Synonym: plexus tympanicus, Jacobson's plexus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| tympanic promontory | A rounded eminence on the labyrinthine wall of the middle ear, caused by the first coil of the cochlea. Synonym: promontorium cavi tympani, tuber cochleae, tympanic promontory. (05 Mar 2000) |
| tympanic ring | In the foetus, a more or less complete bony ring at the medial end of the cartilaginous external acoustic meatus, to which is attached the tympanic membrane. Synonym: annulus tympanicus, tympanic bone. (05 Mar 2000) |
| tympanic sinus | A depression in the tympanic cavity posterior to the tympanic promontory. Synonym: sinus tympani. Sinus unguis, the deep cleft housing the root of the nail. Synonym: sinus of nail. (05 Mar 2000) |
| tympanic veins | Veins exiting from the tympanic cavity through the petrotympanic fissure with the chorda tympani and emptying into the retromandibular vein. Synonym: venae tympanicae. (05 Mar 2000) |
