A bronze horn ca. 4 feet long built in sections with a slightly conical shape along its entire length and could be fitted with a detachable horn mouthpiece. It was used to sound the charge or retreat, however when not preceeded by the sounding of the cornu, it was sounded mainly to signify more routine duties, such as the watches for guards and small working parties. It was played by a tubicen.
