tracer 1. A known amount of a radioactive substance added to an experiment usually to trace (with a geiger counter or similar equipment) the movement of the non-radioactive component of that element through the experiment. 2.A known amount of an enriched stable isotope added to an experiment usually to determine the amount of the non-tracer component of that element using a mass spectrometer. Such tracers have important uses in medicine, geology, biology and chemistry.
