Administration of a nutritionally-adequate solution into a large vein, usually in the chest (central intravenous line). Solution usually contains high-concentration carbohydrate, protein, vitamins and minerals; fats can also be given. A less concentrated solution can be given through a smaller vein, usually in the arm (peripheral parenteral nutrition, PPN).
