| T cell antigen r. |
the characteristic marker of T lymphocytes, consisting of two polypeptide chains linked by a disulfide bridge. Two forms exist: TCR-1, composed of α and β chains and occurring on helper and cytotoxic T cells, and the much less common TCR-2, composed of γ and δ chains and occurring on certain T cells of the gut and epidermis; both forms are associated with the CD3 molecule. The T cell antigen receptor has a constant and a variable (antibody-binding) portion and recognizes both specific foreign antigens and self MHC antigens; both must be seen simultaneously to trigger T cell activation.
