a form of drama that used theater to develop symbolic meanings for the audience. Symbolist dramas involved poetic and metaphorical situations and were less than realistic. One early symbolist innovator was Maurice Maeterlinck, who became popular at the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth century.
