Stereo in the context of photography normally means taking 2 pictures at the same time one slightly to the side of the other - as though one camera was one eye and the other camera the other. Then by displaying these pictures side by side, a 3D effect of depth can be produced if the left eye looks only at the left image, and the right eye only at the right. For an example of this, click HERE.

From the Greek word for solid; identifies sound recording and reproduction by more than one (mono) channel. In home music reproduction, "stereo" came to mean two channel sound. In the film industry, however, "stereo" came to mean at least four channels (left, center, right, and surround). This is why Dolby's film sound technology could be identified simply as Dolby Stereo for the film industry, and why a new term, Dolby Surround, was needed to identify multichannel home sound reproduction.

Released to the public in 1958, stereo is a two-channel audio output that revolutionized, and captivated, the general public. Almost everything we still listen to, aside from the theaters, is in stereo. FM broadcasts, CD's, Radios, Television, Computers, Gaming, and the list goes on. Stereo is still the way of life!
