spindle cell s. 1. any sarcoma composed of spindle-shaped cells; cf. rhabdomyosarcoma.  2. a type of soft tissue sarcoma whose cells are spindle-shaped; it is usually resistant to radiation therapy and may be of either high or low grade malignancy.

spindle elongation t. a theory that suggests that the spindle and asters have a decisive role in cell division; it is based on the observation that elongation of the cell at anaphase is accompanied by a shrinkage at the equator. The centers are believed to be pushed apart by the spindle tubules, since the spindles and asters appear to be rigid structures.

spindle A slender, cylindrical chair part that supports the back and arm-rest bows of Windsor chairs. Some authorities say that all spindles are turned (never shaved) but others disagree. Also, a vertical member mortised between horizontal rails in the back-rest of some post-and-rung chairs.
