| endocardial sclerosis | <radiology> Unknown aetiology, diffuse thickening of endocardium, few live more than 2 yrs, limited to left chambers in 80%, causes restrictive cardiomyopathy (12 Dec 1998) |
|---|---|
| tuberous sclerosis | <radiology> (Bourneville disease) autosomal dominant phakomatosis classic triad: seizures, retardation, adenoma sebaceum, calcified subependymal hamartomas, uncalcified tubers in cerebral cortex, enhancing lesion most likely to be malignant transformation to giant cell astrocytoma associated with: skin lesions, angiomyolipoma, increased risk of renal cell carcinoma (12 Dec 1998) |
| unicellular sclerosis | A growth of fibrous tissue between and isolating the individual cells of a part. (05 Mar 2000) |
| focal sclerosis | <neurology> Neurodegenerative disease characterised by the gradual accumulation of focal plaques of demyelination particularly in the periventricular areas of the brain. Peripheral nerves are not affected. Onset usually in 3rd or 4th decade with intermittent progression over an extended period. Cause still uncertain. (18 Nov 1997) |
| focal sclerosis with hyalinosis | <nephrology> A kidney disorder that results in fibrosis and scarring in the kidney glomerulus. The cause is unknown but some cases can result from reflux nephropathy. The clinical manifestation of this kidney disorder is nephrotic syndrome. Symptoms include weight gain, swelling, hypertension and foamy urine. High blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels are also seen with this disorder. Treatment has included the use of corticosteroids and immunosuppressives. Antihypertensive agents and diuretics may also be necessary. Over one-half will develop chronic renal failure within 10 years of diagnosis. (27 Sep 1997) |
| laminar cortical sclerosis | A degeneration of nerve fibres in the corona radiata in a laminar pattern. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lateral spinal sclerosis | Considered by many to be a subgroup of motor neuron disease; a slowly progressive degenerative disorder of the motor neurons of the cerebral cortex, resulting in widespread weakness on an upper motor neuron basis; spasticity, hyperreflexia, and Babinski signs are present, but not fasciculation potentials, nor any electrodiagnostic evidence of a lower motor neuron lesion. Synonym: lateral spinal sclerosis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lobar sclerosis | Circumscribed atrophy of the cerebral cortex. Synonym: lobar sclerosis, progressive circumscribed cerebral atrophy. (05 Mar 2000) |
| anterior white commissure | A narrow band of white substance bordering on the anterior median fissure of the spinal cord in front of the anterior gray commissure, and consisting of nerve fibres crossing over from one half of the spinal cord to the other. Synonym: commissura alba, anterior white commissure, commissura ventralis alba, ventral white column. (05 Mar 2000) |
| blue white colour selection | <molecular biology, procedure> Method for identifying bacterial clones containing plasmids with inserts. Many modern vectors have their polycloning site within a part of the LacZ gene encoding _ galactosidase, which provides _ complementation in an appropriate mutant E. Coli strain. This means that a re ligated (empty) vector will produce blue colonies when grown on plates containing IPTG and X gal, but colonies with a substantial insert in their plasmid's polycloning site are unable to produce functional _ galactosidase and so produce white colonies. (16 Dec 1997) |
| Bouffardi's white mycetoma | <dermatology> A form of mycetoma common in India and found occasionally in Somalia, caused by the organism Streptomyces somaliensis; in this variety, the muscles, tendons, and bones of the foot are destroyed by the disease process; numerous draining sinuses discharge yellowish grains, clustered like fish roe. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Brumpt's white mycetoma | Mycetoma caused by Pseudallescheria boydii, occurring in temperate and subtropical areas in India; small, white to yellow, hard to soft granules are discharged through the draining sinuses. (05 Mar 2000) |
| ventral white column | A narrow band of white substance bordering on the anterior median fissure of the spinal cord in front of the anterior gray commissure, and consisting of nerve fibres crossing over from one half of the spinal cord to the other. Synonym: commissura alba, anterior white commissure, commissura ventralis alba, ventral white column. (05 Mar 2000) |
| May-White syndrome | <syndrome> Progressive myoclonus epilepsy with lipomas, deafness, and ataxia; probably a familial form of mitochondrial encephalomyopathy. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Vincent's white mycetoma | Mycetoma caused by Actinomadura madurae and occurring in North Africa, India, the Argentine, and Cuba. (05 Mar 2000) |
