a lepra reaction usually occurring during chemotherapy in borderline leprosy representing a type IV (delayed) hypersensitivity reaction with “upgrading” of cell-mediated immunity to Mycobacterium leprae, which tends to move the disease toward the tuberculoid pole. It is chiefly characterized by erythema, edema, and tenderness of preexisting quiescent lesions, the appearance of new lesions, neuritis with nerve damage, fever, adenopathy, and elevation of the leukocyte count.
