A study in which the outcomes in a group of people are analyzed after the outcomes have occurred, by looking back in time from the present. One example is a study in which the medical histories of a group of people who all have the same condition are examined, to determine what similarities there may be in their medical backgrounds. This type of study is conducted by reviewing patient medical records to see if groups of patients that had different treatments had different outcomes. If the only difference between the groups was their treatment, then the different outcome presumably resulted from the treatment.
