primary pulmonary hypertension A condition where there is increased blood pressure in the pulmonary arteries with otherwise normal heart and lungs. The cause is unknown, but there is diffuse narrowing of the pulmonary arteries resulting in increased arteriolar pressures. Secondary heart failure ensues without correction of this problem. There is an increased incidence of this disease in females between the ages of 20 and 40 years. Treatment may include a heart and lung transplant in select cases.
(27 Sep 1997)
primary pulmonary lobule The part of the airway consisting of a respiratory bronchiole and all of its branches.
Synonym: primary pulmonary lobule, respiratory lobule.
(05 Mar 2000)
sarcoidosis, pulmonary Sarcoidosis affecting predominantly the lungs, the site most frequently involved and most commonly causing morbidity and mortality in sarcoidosis. Pulmonary sarcoidosis is characterised by sharply circumscribed granulomas in the alveolar, bronchial, and vascular walls, composed of tightly packed cells derived from the mononuclear phagocyte system. The clinical symptoms when present are dyspnea upon exertion, nonproductive cough, and wheezing. (cecil textbook of medicine, 19th ed, p431)
(12 Dec 1998)
high altitude pulmonary oedema <physiology> The abnormal deposition of fluid into the lungs that occurs with exposure to lower barometric pressure and low oxygen.
(12 Jan 1998)
secondary pulmonary lobule A pyramidal mass of lung tissue whose sides are bounded by the incomplete interlobular connective tissue septa and whose base, which is 1 to 2 cm in diameter, usually faces the pleural surface of the lung; lobule's that occupy a more central position in the lung are not well defined and are considered to consist of three to five pulmonary acini with proximate terminal bronchioles.
(05 Mar 2000)
pulmonary <anatomy, chest medicine> Pertaining to the lungs.
Origin: L. Pulmonarius
(06 Oct 1997)
pulmonary acariasis Infestation of the lungs of monkeys with the mite, Pneumonyssus simicola.
(05 Mar 2000)
pulmonary acinus The part of the airway consisting of a respiratory bronchiole and all of its branches.
Synonym: primary pulmonary lobule, respiratory lobule.
(05 Mar 2000)
pulmonary adenomatosis A neoplastic disease in which the alveoli and distal bronchi are filled with mucus and mucus-secreting columnar epithelial cells; characterised by abundant, extremely tenacious sputum, chills, fever, cough, dyspnea, and pleuritic pain.
(05 Mar 2000)
pulmonary adenomatosis of sheep A chronic pulmonary disease of sheep of viral origin, caused by a member of Herpesviridae characterised by adenomatous proliferations in the alveoli and small bronchioles resembling neoplasia.
Synonym: jaagsiekte.
(05 Mar 2000)
pulmonary adenomatosis, ovine A pulmonary disease of sheep characterised by hyperplasia and hypertrophy of septal cells of the lung.
(12 Dec 1998)
pulmonary alveolar proteinosis <radiology> Overproduction of surfactant which can lead to alveolar (end-air-space) filling, peak age: 20 - 50 yrs, 33% asymptomatic, treatment: lavage Findings: bat-wing alveolar infiltrate, no interstitial disease, no adenopathy
(12 Dec 1998)
pulmonary alveoli Small polyhedral outpouchings along the walls of the alveolar sacs, alveolar ducts and terminal bronchioles through the walls of which gas exchange between alveolar air and pulmonary capillary blood takes place.
(12 Dec 1998)
pulmonary alveolus One of the thin-walled saclike terminal dilations of the respiratory bronchioles, alveolar ducts, and alveolar sacs across which gas exchange occurs between alveolar air and the pulmonary capillaries.
Synonym: alveoli pulmonis, alveolus, air cells, air vesicles, bronchic cells.
(05 Mar 2000)
pulmonary amoebiasis Infection of the lung by amoebae; usually indicates extension of Entamoeba histolytica infection from abscess of liver, penetrating through the diaphragm into the lung.
