gangrene of the skin due to a mixed synergistic infection by aerobic hemolytic Staphylococcus aureus, a microaerophilic nonhemolytic streptococcus, or gram-negative rods, seen as a complication of abdominal or thoracic surgery or a traumatic wound. The characteristic lesion is a wide area of pale red cellulitis that later ulcerates and enlarges to form an ulcerative plaque with central granulation surrounded by gangrenous skin that is in turn surrounded by an undermined, rolled, purplish border. See also Meleney's ulcer (def. 1). Called also burrowing phagedenic ulcer, Meleney's ulcer, Meleney's synergistic g., and undermining burrowing ulcer.

progressive paralysis and atrophy of the muscles of the lips, tongue, mouth, pharynx, and larynx due to lesions of the motor nuclei of the lower brain stem. It is a chronic, generally fatal disease with onset usually in late adulthood; onset may be earlier in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, syringobulbia, or multiple sclerosis. Called also bulbar, glossolabial, glossopharyngolabial, labial, labioglossolaryngeal, labioglossopharyngeal, or progressive bulbar paralysis; and Duchenne's paralysis or syndrome.
