tissue culture <cell culture> Originally the maintenance and growth of pieces of explanted tissue (plant or animal) in culture away from the source organism. Now usually refers to the (much more frequently used) technique of cell culture, using cells dispersed from tissues or distant descendants of such cells.
(18 Nov 1997)
tissue culture infectious dose The quantity of a cytopathogenic agent, such as a virus, that will produce a cytopathic effect in 50% of the cultures inoculated.
(05 Mar 2000)
tissue culture plastic <cell culture> Polystyrene that has been rendered wettable by oxidation, a treatment that increases its adhesiveness for cells from animal tissues and without which anchorage dependent cells will not grow. Commercially achieved by treatment known as glow discharge.
(18 Nov 1997)
elective culture A method of isolating microorganisms capable of utilizing a specific substrate by incubating an inoculum in a medium containing the substrate; the medium usually contains substances or has characteristics that inhibit the growth of unwanted microorganisms.
Synonym: enrichment culture.
(05 Mar 2000)
enrichment culture <cell culture, microbiology> Use of selective culture media and incubation conditions to isolate microorganisms directly from nature.
(09 Oct 1997)
type culture A type strain of microorganism preserved in a culture collection as the standard.
(05 Mar 2000)
faecal culture <investigation, microbiology> A test used to identify pathogenic organisms in the stools that may be responsible for gastroenteritis. Often performed in cases of unexplained diarrhoea. May indicate bacterial, viral or parasitic disease. Cultures are also helpful in assisting the selection an appropriate antibiotic agent.
See: traveler's diarrhoea.
(27 Sep 1997)
Loeffler's blood culture medium A culture medium consisting of beef blood serum, sheep blood serum, and beef bouillon containing peptone, glucose, and sodium chloride; used for the isolation of Corynebacterium diphtheriae.
(05 Mar 2000)
Lowenstein-Jensen culture medium Primary mycobacterial recovery media composed of fresh whole eggs, defined salts, glycerol, potato flour, and malachite green (as an inhibitory agent).
Synonym: Lowenstein-Jensen medium.
(05 Mar 2000)
T-cell-rich, B-cell lymphoma <tumour> A B-cell lymphoma in which more than 90% of the cells are of T-cell origin, masking the large cells that form the neoplastic B-cell component.
See: adult T-cell lymphoma.
(05 Mar 2000)
acute primary haemorrhagic meningoencephalitis A disease characterised by acute onset of fever, followed by convulsions, delirium, and coma, and associated with perivascular demyelination and haemorrhagic foci in the central nervous system.
Synonym: acute primary haemorrhagic meningoencephalitis, Strumpell's disease.
(05 Mar 2000)
acyclic monoterpene primary alcohol - NADP oxidoreductase <enzyme> From catmint nepeta racemosa; involved in the biosynthesis of iridoid monoterpenes; oxidises geraniol, nerol, and their 10-hydroxy derivatives in the presence of nadp(+).
Registry number: EC 1.1.1.-
Synonym: monoterpene primary alcohol - nadp oxidoreductase, ampano
(26 Jun 1999)
anterior primary division <anatomy, nerve> The larger, anterolaterally-directed major terminal branch (with the dorsal primary ramus) of all 31 pairs of mixed spinal nerves, formed at the intervertebral foramen. Most ventral primary rami, especially those involved in the innervation of the limbs, participate in the formation of the major nerve plexuses (cervical, brachial, and lumbosacral) and lose their identities. Most in the thoracic region, however, remain separate from adjacent rami to become the intercostal and subcostal nerves. Ventral primary rami provide innervation to the anterolateral body wall and trunk. Nomina Anatomica lists ventral primary rami as "rami ventrales" for each group of spinal nerves: 1) cervical (nervorum cervicalium ), 2) thoracic (nervorum thoracicorum ), 3) lumbar (nervorum lumbalium ), 4) sacral (nervorum sacralium )m, and 5) coccygeal (nervi coccygei ).
Synonym: ramus ventralis nervi spinalis, anterior primary division.
(05 Mar 2000)
aphasia, primary progressive A type of aphasia appearing gradually and gradually worsening without any major change in other cognitive functions. It is regarded by some authors as a syndrome which may be due to various degenerative diseases of the cerebral cortex (notably alzheimer disease, owing to its frequency), while others see in it an autonomous disease related to a neuropathological process that is distinct from the main degenerative dementias. The principal clinical peculiarity of primary progressive aphasia is that it spares the patient's autonomy for a long time, but ultimately turns into global dementia.
(12 Dec 1998)
ventral primary rami of cervical spinal nerves See: ventral primary ramus of spinal nerve.
Synonym: rami ventrales nervorum cervicalium.
