is the specification of a file or directory in a hierarchical file system using pathname separators ("/" in Unix, "\" in MS-DOS) between directories. AKA pathname, the location of a file or directory in the system's hierarchical structure of directories. The pathname tells the shell where in the directory tree to find a file. Files may be referred to by absolute pathname (also called full or complete pathname) or relative pathname.
