subacute spongiform encephalopathy A form of spongiform encephalopathy that is associated with a "slow virus", which to date has not been adequately described, is transmissible, and has a rapidly progressive, fatal course; e.g., Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, kuru, Gerstmann-Straussler syndrome, scrapie.
