| crural ring | The superior opening of the femoral canal, bounded anteriorly by the inguinal ligament, posteriorly by the pectineus muscle, medially by the lacunar ligament, and laterally by the femoral vein. Passageway by which many lymphatics from lower limb pass to abdomen. Accommodates enlargement of femoral vein in Valsalva manoeuvre. Often occupied by a lymph node (Cloquet's) and is the site of femoral hernias. Synonym: annulus femoralis, crural ring. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|---|
| crural septum | The delicate fibrous membrane that closes the femoral ring at the base of the femoral canal. Synonym: septum femorale, Cloquet's septum, crural septum. (05 Mar 2000) |
| crural sheath | The fascia enclosing the femoral vessels, formed by the transversalis fascia anteriorly and the iliac fascia posteriorly; two septa divide the sheath into three compartments, the lateral of which contains the femoral artery and the femoral branch of the genitofemoral nerve, the middle the femoral vein, and the medial is the femoral canal. Synonym: crural sheath, infundibuliform sheath. (05 Mar 2000) |
| crural triangle | An area of predilection for the petechial initial rash of smallpox; it occupies the lower abdominal, inguinal, and genital regions and the inner aspects of the thighs, the base of the triangle traversing the umbilicus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| deep crural arch | Thickened inferior margin of the transversalis fascia seen as a fibrous band running parallel and posterior (deep) to the inguinal ligament, contributing to the posterior wall of the inguinal canal as it bridges the external iliac-femoral vessels from the iliopectineal arch to the superior pubic ramus. It marks the inferior edge of the deep inguinal ring and the medial margin of the femoral canal. Seen only when the inguinal region is viewed from its internal aspect, it is a useful landmark in laparoscopy of this region, as for repair of inguinal herniae. Synonym: deep crural arch, Thompson's ligament. (05 Mar 2000) |
| transverse crural ligament | The ligament that binds down the extensor tendons proximal to the ankle joint; it is continuous with (a thickening of) the deep fascia of the leg. Synonym: retinaculum musculorum extensorum superius, ligamentum transversum cruris, superior retinaculum of extensor muscles, transverse crural ligament, transverse ligament of leg. (05 Mar 2000) |
| medial anterior thoracic nerve | <anatomy, nerve> A nerve that arises from the medial cord of the brachial plexus to supply the pectoral muscles; usually pierces pectoralis minor, then continues to supply mainly the sternocostal portion of pectoralis major. Synonym: nervus pectoralis medialis, medial anterior thoracic nerve. (05 Mar 2000) |
| medial calcaneal branches of tibial nerve | <anatomy, nerve> Cutaneous branches of tibial nerve distributed to the inferior and medial heel. Synonym: rami calcanei mediales nervi tibialis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| medial nasal branches of anterior ethmoidal nerve | <anatomy, nerve> Branches of nasociliary nerve distributed to the nasal septum. Synonym: rami nasales mediales nervi ethmoidalis anterioris. (05 Mar 2000) |
| medial pectoral nerve | <anatomy, nerve> A nerve that arises from the medial cord of the brachial plexus to supply the pectoral muscles; usually pierces pectoralis minor, then continues to supply mainly the sternocostal portion of pectoralis major. Synonym: nervus pectoralis medialis, medial anterior thoracic nerve. (05 Mar 2000) |
| medial plantar nerve | <anatomy, nerve> One of the two terminal branches of the tibial nerve; it courses along the medial aspect of the sole to supply the abductor hallucis and flexor digitorum brevis and, by way of common and proper digital branches, to innervate the skin of the medial part of the foot and medial three and one-half toes. Synonym: nervus plantaris medialis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| medial popliteal nerve | <anatomy, nerve> The medial terminal branch of the sciatic nerve. The tibial nerve fibres originate in lumbar and sacral spinal segments (l4 to s2). They supply motor and sensory innervation to parts of the calf and foot. (12 Dec 1998) |
| medial root of median nerve | <anatomy, nerve> The part of the median nerve coming from the medial cord of the brachial plexus. Synonym: radix medialis nervi mediani. (05 Mar 2000) |
| medial supraclavicular nerve | <anatomy, nerve> One of several nerves arising from the cervical plexus which supply the skin over the upper medial part of the thorax. Synonym: nervus supraclavicularis medialis, anterior supraclavicular nerve. (05 Mar 2000) |
| communicating branch of otic ganglion with medial pterygoid nerve | <anatomy, nerve> Branch of otic ganglion joining the nerve to the medial pterygoid muscle. Synonym: ramus communicans ganglii otici cum nervo pterygoideo mediali. (05 Mar 2000) |
