a class of ciliate protozoa (phylum Ciliophora), characterized by the presence of isolated kineties in the oral region of the body (kinetofragments) bearing cilia but not compound ciliary organelles; a cytostome and cytopharyngeal apparatus are often present. It comprises four subclasses: Gymnostomatia, Vestibuliferia, Hypostomatia, and Suctoria.
