Formula stating that illumination at a point on a surface varies directly with the intensity of a point source, and inversely as the square of the distance between the source and the point; illustrates how the same quantity of light flux is distributed over a greater area as the distance from the source to the surface is increased.

For directional lamps (ie, narrow spot, spot, flood, wide flood, etc.), a formula used to determine the relationship between the CandlePower (Cp) of the lamp, the Distance (D) the lamp is from the surface to be illuminated, and the FootCandle (Fc) level produced on that surface. If any two of the three elements are known, the third can be determined.
