| interstitial plasma cell pneumonia | <chest medicine> A pneumonia caused by an infection with Pneumocystis carinii. Pneumocystis carinii grows rapidly in the lungs of patients with immunosuppression, particularly due to AIDS and is the leading AIDS-related cause of death. Pneumocystis carinii infection sometimes may occur elsewhere in the body (skin, eye, spleen, liver or heart). It is considered one of the diagnostic criteria for AIDS in an HIV positive individual. (10 Jan 1998) |
| interstitial pneumonia | <chest medicine> A form of pneumonia which involves the interstitial tissues (connective tissue) of the lung. Causes are varied and include: infection with Pneumocystis carinii, radiation exposure, toxic inhalation, viral pneumonias and giant cell pneumonia. (27 Sep 1997) |
| interstitial pneumonitis | <chest medicine, pathology> A form if pneumonia which involves the interstitial tissues (connective tissue) of the lung. Causes are varied and include: infection with Pneumocystis carinii, radiation exposure, toxic inhalation, viral pneumonias and giant cell pneumonia. (27 Sep 1997) |
| interstitial pregnancy | Development of the fertilised ovum in the uterine portion of the fallopian tube. Synonym: interstitial pregnancy, tubouterine pregnancy. (05 Mar 2000) |
| interstitial pulmonary fibrosis | <radiology> Idiopathic, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (AKA: usual interstitial pneumonitis), Hamman-Rich syndrome (rapidly progressive), drug-related, collagen-vascular disease, rheumatoid lung disease, scleroderma (12 Dec 1998) |
| interstitial radiation | Radiation therapy in which a radioactive material is placed directly into a tumour. (12 Dec 1998) |
| interstitial radiation therapy | <oncology> The implantation of radioactive seeds directly into a tumour. (10 Jan 1998) |
| interstitial therapy | Radiation therapy by means of radioactive seeds or needles implanted directly into the tissues to be irradiated. (05 Mar 2000) |
| interstitial tissue | <pathology> Rather general term for mesodermally derived tissue that may be more or less specialised. Cartilage and bone are specialised connective tissue, as is blood, but the term is probably better reserved for the less specialised tissue that is rich in extracellular matrix (collagen, proteoglycan etc.) and that surrounds other more highly ordered tissues and organs. (18 Nov 1997) |
| usual interstitial pneumonia of Liebow | A progressive inflammatory condition starting with diffuse alveolar damage and resulting in fibrosis and honeycombing over a variable time period; also a common feature of collagen-vascular diseases. Synonym: fibrosing alveolitis, Hamman-Rich syndrome, idiopathic interstitial fibrosis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lung diseases, interstitial | A heterogeneous group of noninfectious, nonmalignant disorders of the lower respiratory tract, affecting primarily the alveolar wall structures but also often involving the small airways and blood vessels of the lung parenchyma. "interstitial" refers to the fact that the interstitium of the alveolar walls is thickened, usually by fibrosis. This group of diseases is usually inflammatory. (12 Dec 1998) |
| lymphocytic interstitial pneumonia | A rare disease characterised by interstitial accumulation of lymphocytes in the lungs and late fibrosis; usually a result of a lymphoma, occasionally seen in AIDS, especially. In children. Sometimes seen as an autoimmune disorder. Synonym: lymphocytic interstitial pneumonia, lymphoid interstitial pneumonia. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lymphocytic interstitial pneumonitis | A rare disease characterised by interstitial accumulation of lymphocytes in the lungs and late fibrosis; usually a result of a lymphoma, occasionally seen in AIDS, especially. In children. Sometimes seen as an autoimmune disorder. Synonym: lymphocytic interstitial pneumonia, lymphoid interstitial pneumonia. (05 Mar 2000) |
