a subclass of chiefly freshwater, ciliate protozoa (class Oligohymenophorea, phylum Ciliophora) with uniform, heavy body ciliature and a ventral buccal cavity when one is present; if kinetodesmata are present, they are usually conspicuous. It comprises three orders: Hymenostomatida, Scuticociliatida, and Astomatida.

an order of ciliate protozoa (subclass Hymenostomatia, class Oligohymenophorea) characterized by the presence of a well-defined buccal cavity containing membranelles or peniculi with infraciliary bases typically three to four rows of kinetosomes wide; and by a ventral oral area, usually in the anterior half of the body. It comprises three suborders: Tetrahymenina, Ophryoglenina, and Peniculina.

| Hymenoxys |
a genus of herbs found in North America; some species contain the lactone hymenovin, which causes gastroenteritis and vomiting in cattle and sheep. Two common poisonous species are H. odora´ta, the bitterweed, and H. richardso´nii, the pingue or rubberweed.
