| corneal topography | Measurement of the anterior surface of the cornea, its curvature and shape. It is used often to diagnose keratoconus and other corneal diseases, and corneal changes after keratotomy and keratoplasty. A significant application is in the fitting of contact lenses. In performing corneal topography, many different techniques can be employed: keratometry, keratoscopy, photokeratoscopy, profile photography, computer-assisted image processing, etc. (12 Dec 1998) |

| corneal transplant | A surgical procedure to replace a damaged cornea with a healthy one from a donor's eye. Unlike transplantation of most other organs, the cornea tends to have a problem with transplant rejection. Corneal transplants are indicated in cases of severe corneal injury or corneal infection (corneal ulcer) which has left the cornea scarred. (27 Sep 1997) |
| corneal transplantation | Partial or total replacement of the cornea from one human or animal to another. (12 Dec 1998) |
| corneal trepanation | corneal transplant |
| corneal ulcer | An infectious process of the cornea, resulting in clouding of the cornea, marked eye pain and decreased vision. See: Herpes simplex keratitis. (27 Sep 1997) |
| serpiginous corneal ulcer | Serpentine ulceration of the cornea, due to infection, most often with Streptococcus pneumoniae. (05 Mar 2000) |
| dendritic corneal ulcer | Keratitis caused by herpes simplex virus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| endothelium, corneal | Single layer of large flattened cells covering the surface of the cornea. (12 Dec 1998) |
| epithelium, corneal | The outer epithelial layer of the cornea, consisting of stratified squamous epithelium continuous with that of the conjunctiva. (12 Dec 1998) |
| juvenile epithelial corneal dystrophy | Epithelial dystrophy characterised by progressive cysts and opacities of the corneal epithelium, with onset in infancy. Inheritance: autosomal dominant with incomplete penetrance. Synonym: Meesman dystrophy. (22 Sep 2002) |
| lattice corneal dystrophy | A corneal dystrophy due to localised accumulation of amyloid in a reticular pattern; manifest at puberty and progressing slowly until eventually useful vision is lost; autosomal dominant inheritance. (05 Mar 2000) |
| adipose degeneration | Abnormal formation of microscopically visible droplets of fat in the cytoplasm of cells, as a result of injury. Synonym: adipose degeneration, steatosis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| adiposogenital degeneration | A disorder characterised primarily by obesity and hypogonadotrophic hypogonadism in adolescent boys; dwarfism is rare, and when present is thought to reflect hypothyroidism. Visual loss, behavioural abnormalities, and diabetes insipidus may occur. Frohlich's syndrome often is used synonymously for this disorder, although the original case involved a pituitary tumour; most cases are thought to result from hypothalamic dysfunction in areas regulating appetite and gonadal development. The most common causes are pituitary and hypothalamic neoplasms. Synonym: adiposis orchica, adiposogenital degeneration, adiposogenital dystrophy, adiposogenital syndrome, hypophysial syndrome, hypothalamic obesity with hypogonadism. Origin: L. Fr. G. Dys-, bad, + trophe, nourishment (05 Mar 2000) |
| age-related macular degeneration | A common macular degeneration beginning with drusen of the macula and pigment disruption and sometimes leading to severe loss of central vision. (05 Mar 2000) |
| albuminous degeneration | An obsolete terms for cloudy swelling. (05 Mar 2000) |
