Seen in premature infants because of lung immaturity that causes a surfactant deficiency. Surfactant is what keeps the alveoli of the lungs from collapsing. When there is a deficiency this can lead to respiratory failure. Also known as Respiratory Distress Syndrome.

A type of connective tissue that contains chondrocytes embedded within lacunae, both of which are surrounded by a dense, semitranslucent matrix of collagen fibers and glycosaminoglycans. Hyaline cartilage is found in tracheal and bronchial walls, the costal cartilages, the nose, and the larynx.
