When a reference wave is applied to a light wave reflected by or transmitted through an object, interference occurs. A hologram is the interference pattern recorded on a suitable recording medium. A hologram can reproduce the image of the original object either in a 2D or 3D format.

A true hologram is created optically with laser light. Holograms are very difficult to copy or simulate without sophisticated, expensive equipment and much expertise. They are very effective for authentication of genuine articles or protection against forgery. They generally are much more expensive than other security features, depending on the manufacturer, but may be needed for birth certificates, some licenses and immigration papers. Holographic tape and foil are less costly alternatives.
