Haemosporina a suborder of heteroxenous protozoa (subclass Coccidia, class Sporozoea) in which merogony takes place in a vertebrate, usually in the blood, and sporogony in the alimentary canal of a blood-sucking insect. Hemosporians are characterized by the independent development of macrogamete and microgamont; the absence of syzygy; the usual absence of a conoid; the production by the microgamont of eight flagellated microgametes; and the formation of a motile zygote (ookinete). Representative genera include Haemoproteus, Hepatocystis, Leucocytozoon, and Plasmodium.
