Gymnodinium a genus of plantlike marine and freshwater protozoa (order Dinoflagellida, class Phytomastigophorea), most species of which have many colored (yellow, brown, green, or blue) chromatophores. Like other dinoflagellates, they produce discoloration of the water (red tide) when present in vast numbers, and certain species, especially G. breve, have been associated with a type of shellfish poisoning (q.v.).
