| formate dehydrogenase |
[EC 1.2.1.2] an enzyme of the oxidoreductase class that catalyzes the oxidation of formate to CO2, using NAD+ as an electron acceptor. The reaction occurs in bacteria but not in mammals. The fact that bacteria containing the enzyme (e.g., Escherichia coli ) produce gas in mixed acid fermentations, and those that do not form the enzyme (e.g., Shigella) produce acid but no gas, is the basis for a test for the identification of Enterobacteriaceae.
