a type of mycotoxicosis seen in domestic animals, especially horses, resulting from ingestion of food contaminated with a fungus, usually Fusarium moniliforme. It causes neurotoxicity, particularly inflammation or softening of the white matter of the brain, with symptoms such as ataxia, tremor, circling, dimmed vision, drowsiness, and sometimes death. See also moldy corn p. Called also leukoencephalitis, leukoencephalomalacia, mycotoxic leukoencephalomalacia, and sleepy staggers.
