proximal femoral focal deficiency A congenital defect in which variable portions of the upper end of the femur are reduced or absent.
(05 Mar 2000)
slipped capital femoral epiphysis <orthopaedics> This refers to chronic fracture of the epiphyseal growth plate known as a slipped capital femoral epiphysis.
The capital (head of the femur) should sit squarely on the femoral neck. Abnormal movement along the growth plate results in the slip. Often this condition will present in prepubescent males with an insidious onset of thigh or knee pain with a painful limp. Hip motion will be limited, particularly internal rotation.
Consultation with an orthopaedic surgeon is necessary to repair this problem. Untreated cases can result in serious growth abnormalities and permanent disability.
(27 Sep 1997)
deep branch of the medial femoral circumflex artery <anatomy, artery> Distributed to posterior aspect of femoral head and neck.
Synonym: ramus profundus arteriae circumflexae femoris medialis.
(05 Mar 2000)
deep femoral vein <anatomy, vein> The vein that accompanies the deep femoral artery, receiving perforating veins from the lateral and posterior aspects of the thigh. It joins the femoral vein in the femoral triangle, usually in common with the medial and lateral circumflex femoral veins.
Synonym: vena profunda femoris.
(05 Mar 2000)
descending branch of lateral circumflex femoral artery <anatomy, artery> A major branch of the lateral circumflex femoral artery accompanying the nerve to the vastus lateralis muscle along the anterior border of that muscle and deep to the rectus femoris muscle, supplying both muscles. Anastomosis: with lateral superior genicular artery, i.e., it contributes to the articular network of the knee.
Synonym: ramus descendens arteriae circumflexae femoris lateralis.
(05 Mar 2000)
femoral <anatomy> Pertaining to the femur or to the thigh.
Origin: L. Femoralis

femoral arch <anatomy> A fibrous band formed by the thickened inferior border of the aponeurosis of the external oblique that extends from the anterior superior spine of the ilium to the pubic tubercle bridging, muscular and vascular lacunae;forms the floor of the inguinal canal; gives origin to the lowermost fibres of internal oblique and transversus abdominis muscles.
See: aponeurosis of external abdominal oblique muscle.
Synonym: ligamentum inguinale, arcus inguinalis, crural arch, fallopian arch, fallopian ligament, femoral arch, Poupart's ligament.
(05 Mar 2000)
femoral artery <anatomy, artery> The main artery of the thigh, a continuation of the external iliac artery.

Synonym: ramus femoralis nervi genitofemoralis.
(05 Mar 2000)
femoral canal The medial compartment of the femoral sheath.
Synonym: canalis femoralis.
(05 Mar 2000)
femoral fossa A depression on the peritoneal surface of the abdominal wall, inferior to the inguinal ligament, corresponding to the situation of the femoral ring.
Synonym: crural fossa, fovea femoralis.
