| endometriosis interna | <gynaecology> A condition where there is abnormal thickening of the endometrial lining of the uterus, extending into the fibrous and muscular layers. This condition occurs most commonly in women above 30 who have had children. Symptoms include prolonged or heavy menstrual bleeding and painful menses with cramping. Treatment generally includes pain medications and a hysterectomy in select (more severe) cases. Birth control pills may aggravate symptoms. (07 Apr 1998) |
| tunica interna bulbi | Light sensitive layer of the eye. In vertebrates, looking from outside, there are four major cell layers: (i) the outer neural retina, which contains neurons (ganglion cells, amacrine cells, bipolar cells) as well as blood vessels, (ii) the photoreceptor layer, a single layer of rods and cones, (iii) the pigmented retinal epithelium (PRE or RPE), (iv) the choroid, composed of connective tissue, fibroblasts and including a well vascularised layer, the chorio capillaris, underlying the basal lamina of the PRE. Behind the choroid is the sclera, a thick organ capsule. In molluscs (especially cephalopods such as the squid) the retina has the light sensitive cells as the outer layer with the neural and supporting tissues below. See: retinal rods, retinal cones, rhodopsin. (18 Nov 1997) |
| tunica interna thecae folliculi | <embryology> The inner cellular and vascular layer of the vesicular ovarian follicle. There is evidence that the epithelioid cells produce oestrogen and contribute to the formation of the corpus luteum after ovulation. Synonym: theca interna. (05 Mar 2000) |
| facies interna | The internal concave surface of either the frontal or the parietal bone. Synonym: facies interna. (05 Mar 2000) |
| facies interna ossis frontalis | The surface of the frontal bone that contributes to the wall of the cranial cavity. Synonym: facies interna ossis frontalis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| facies interna ossis parietalis | The concave surface of the parietal bone forming part of the wall of the cranial cavity. Synonym: facies interna ossis parietalis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lamina interna cranii | The inner compact layer of the cranial bones. Synonym: lamina interna cranii. (05 Mar 2000) |
| fovea inguinalis interna | A depression on the peritoneal surface of the anterior abdominal wall between the ridges formed by the inferior epigastric artery and the medial umbilical ligament; it corresponds to the position of the superficial inguinal ring and is the site of a direct inguinal hernia. Synonym: fossa inguinalis medialis, fovea inguinalis interna. (05 Mar 2000) |
| aditus pelvis | The upper opening of the true pelvis, bounded anteriorly by the pubic symphysis and the pubic crest on either side, laterally by the iliopectineal lines, and posteriorly by the promontory of the sacrum. Synonym: apertura pelvis superior, aditus pelvis, first parallel pelvic plane, pelvic brim, pelvic inlet, pelvic plane of inlet, plane of inlet. (05 Mar 2000) |
| android pelvis | A masculine or funnel-shaped pelvis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| anthropoid pelvis | An apelike pelvis, with a long anteroposterior diameter and a narrow transverse diameter. (05 Mar 2000) |
| apertura pelvis inferior | The lower opening of the true pelvis, bounded anteriorly by the pubic arch, laterally by the rami of the ischium and the sacrotuberous ligament on either side, and posteriorly by these ligaments and the tip of the coccyx. Synonym: apertura pelvis inferior, apertura pelvis minoris, fourth parallel pelvic plane, pelvic outlet, pelvic plane of outlet, plane of outlet. (05 Mar 2000) |
| apertura pelvis minoris | The lower opening of the true pelvis, bounded anteriorly by the pubic arch, laterally by the rami of the ischium and the sacrotuberous ligament on either side, and posteriorly by these ligaments and the tip of the coccyx. Synonym: apertura pelvis inferior, apertura pelvis minoris, fourth parallel pelvic plane, pelvic outlet, pelvic plane of outlet, plane of outlet. (05 Mar 2000) |
| apertura pelvis superior | The upper opening of the true pelvis, bounded anteriorly by the pubic symphysis and the pubic crest on either side, laterally by the iliopectineal lines, and posteriorly by the promontory of the sacrum. Synonym: apertura pelvis superior, aditus pelvis, first parallel pelvic plane, pelvic brim, pelvic inlet, pelvic plane of inlet, plane of inlet. (05 Mar 2000) |
