The destruction of the alveolar walls reduces the elasticity of the lung. Loss of elasticity leads to the collapse of the bronchioles, obstructing airflow out of the alveoli. It no longer snaps back into place when stretched but lies floppy. When fresh air enters a lung with emphysema, it enters the alveoli because of changes in pressure.
