the second phase of ventricular systole, being the period intervening between the opening and closing of the semilunar valves, during which the blood is being discharged into the aortic and pulmonary arteries. It can be divided into an initial period of rapid ejection followed by a period of reduced ejection as aortic and ventricular pressures decline from their peak. Called also ejection phase and sphygmic p. See illustration at cardiac cycle, under cycle.

high-pitched clicking sounds occurring shortly after the first heart sound, at the time of maximal opening of the semilunar valves; seen in patients with abnormalities of these valves or dilatations of the aortic or pulmonary arteries. The sounds may be described as aortic or pulmonic and vascular or valvular. Called also ejection clicks.

The proportion, or fraction, of blood pumped out of your heart with each beat is called the ejection fraction. A normal heart pumps out a little more than half the heart's volume of blood with each beat. A normal EF is 55 percent or higher

the percentage of blood pumped to the body by the left ventricle during every heartbeat. People with a normal, healthy heart typically have an ejection fraction of 55 percent or greater. An ejection fraction of 40 percent or less indicates a weakened heart.
