eclampsia Complication of toxemia of pregnancy indicated by generalised convulsions which may be life-threatening to both the mother (neurological sequelae) and the foetus (acute foetal distress). It is often preceded by neurological signs such as headache, buzzing in the ears or spots before the eyes, which the physician always tries to detect, especially in the context of toxemia of pregnancy.
