funiculus anterior Anterior white column of spinal cord, a column or bundle of white matter on either side of the anterior median fissure, between that and the anterolateral sulcus.
Synonym: funiculus anterior.
(05 Mar 2000)
funiculus dorsalis (05 Mar 2000)
funiculus gracilis gracile fasciculus
funiculus lateralis The lateral white column of the spinal cord between the lines of exit and entrance of the anterior and posterior nerve roots.
Synonym: funiculus lateralis, anterolateral column of spinal cord, lateral funiculus of spinal cord.
(05 Mar 2000)
funiculus posterior (05 Mar 2000)
funiculus separans An oblique ridge in the floor of the fourth ventricle of the brain, separating the area postrema from the vagal trigone.
(05 Mar 2000)
funiculus solitarius A slender, compact fibre bundle extending longitudinally through the dorsolateral region of the medullary tegmentum, surrounded by the nucleus of the solitary tract, below the obex decussating over the central canal, and descending over some distance into the upper cervical segments of the spinal cord. It is composed of primary sensory fibres that enter with the vagus, glossopharyngeal, and facial nerves, and in part convey information from stretch receptors and chemoreceptors in the walls of the cardiovascular, respiratory, and intestinal tracts; in rostral parts of the tract impulses are generated by the receptor cells of the taste buds in the mucosa of the tongue. Its fibres are distributed to the nucleus of the solitary tract.
Synonym: tractus solitarius, fasciculus rotundus, fasciculus solitarius, funiculus solitarius, Gierke's respiratory bundle, Krause's respiratory bundle, round fasciculus, solitary bundle, solitary fasciculus.
(05 Mar 2000)
funiculus spermaticus A group of structures which go through the inguinal canal to the testis. The structures include the vas deferens, arteries, veins, lymphatic vessels, and nerves.
(12 Dec 1998)
funiculus teres Longitudinal elevation of the rhomboid fossa, extending along either side of the midline throughout the length of the rhombencephalon; made up of named elevations such as the facial colliculus and the hypoglossal and vagal trigones.
Synonym: eminentia medialis, eminentia teres, funiculus teres, round eminence.
(05 Mar 2000)
funiculus umbilicalis The flexible structure, giving passage to the umbilical arteries and vein, which connects the embryo or foetus to the placenta.
(12 Dec 1998)
gangliated cord One of the two long ganglionated nerve strands alongside the vertebral column that extend from the base of the skull to the coccyx; they are connected to each spinal nerve by gray rami and receive fibres from the spinal cord through white rami connecting with the thoracic and upper lumbar spinal nerves.
Synonym: truncus sympathicus, gangliated cord.
(05 Mar 2000)
genital cord One of a pair of mesenchymal ridges bulging into the caudal part of the celom of a young embryo and containing the mesonephric and paramesonephric duct.
(05 Mar 2000)
medial cord of brachial plexus In the brachial plexus, the bundle of nerve fibres formed by the anterior division of the inferior trunk which lies medial to the axillary artery; it gives off the medial pectoral nerve, the medial brachial cutaneous, and medial antebrachial cutaneous, nerves and end by dividing into the medial root of the median nerves and the ulnar nerve.
Synonym: fasciculus medialis plexus brachialis.
(05 Mar 2000)
vitelline cord A persistent yolk stalk in the form of a solid cord of tissue connecting ileum to umbilicus.
Synonym: omphalomesenteric cord.
(05 Mar 2000)
vocal cord nodules Small, circumscribed, bilateral, beadlike enlargements on the vocal cords caused by overuse or abuse of the voice; often reversible by voice therapy.
