a measure of the capability of a unit volume of a material to store electrostatic energy on application of a unit voltage; the ability of that material to resist the formation of an electric field within it. It is the ratio of the capacitance of a capacitor having the material versus the same capacitor having only a vacuum as the dielectric. Symbol κ.
