| cohort study |
A study in which two cohorts of subjects - one with the exposure of interest and one without - are followed over time for the development of a disease. For example, a researcher might assemble cohorts of smokers and non-smokers, then follow them over time for dementia. Cohorts can be created by looking back in time to past exposures - a retrospective cohort study.
