| DOA | date of admission; dead on arrival; Department of Agriculture; depth of anesthesia; differential opt... |
| EXAFS | extended x-ray absorption fine structure |
| GF-AAS | graphite furnace atomic absorption spectroscopy |
| GPKA | guinea pig kidney absorption [test] |
| disjunctive absorption | Absorption of living tissue in immediate relation with a necrosed part, producing a line of demarcation. (05 Mar 2000) |

| d-xylose absorption | This test measures the intestine's ability to absorb the simple sugar, D-xylose. This is an indicator for whether or not nutrients are being absorbed properly in the intestine. This test is often used to evaluate persistent diarrhoea, weight loss, malnutrition and cases of suspected malabsorption. Abnormal results may be seen in the following conditions: Crohn's disease, Giardiasis, hookworm infestation, radiation enteritis, celiac sprue, viral gastroenteritis and Whipple's disease. (27 Sep 1997) |
| interstitial absorption | The removal of water or of substances in the interstitial fluid by the lymphatics. (05 Mar 2000) |
| objective circle | <microscopy> When the focused objective is examined by with- drawing the ocular and viewing its back focal plane through the microscope bodytube, the limiting boundary of the objective, the circumference of the white spot of light, is the objective circle. (05 Aug 1998) |
| electron resonance absorption | <physics> A spectrometric method, based on measurement of electron spins and magnetic moments, for detecting and estimating free radicals in reactions and in biological systems. Synonym: electron paramagnetic resonance. (05 Mar 2000) |
| external absorption | The absorption of substances through skin, mucocutaneous surfaces, or mucous membranes. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Zinn's vascular circle | <anatomy, nerve> A network of branches of the short ciliary arteries on the sclera around the point of entrance of the optic nerve. Synonym: circulus vasculosus nervi optici, circulus arteriosus halleri, circulus zinnii, Haller's circle, Zinn's corona, Zinn's vascular circle. (05 Mar 2000) |
| fluorescent treponemal antibody-absorption test | <investigation> A sensitive and specific serologic test for syphilis. It is more specific than the VDRL assay. The patient's serum is diluted to remove non-specific antibodies and then mixed on a glass slide with Nichol's strain of Treponema pallidum. If antibodies are present in the patient's serum they bind to the antigen and the bound antibodies are detected with fluoresceinated antihuman gamma-globulin antibody. Synonym: FTA-ABS test. (12 Sep2002) |
| least diffusion circle | In the configuration of rays emerging from a spherocylindrical lens system, the place where diverging rays of the lens first forming a line image are balanced by converging rays of the second lens. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lesser arterial circle of iris | An arterial circle near the pupillary margin of the iris. Synonym: circulus arteriosus iridis minor. (05 Mar 2000) |
| linear absorption coefficient | That fraction of ionizing radiation absorbed in a unit thickness of a substance or tissue. See: absorption coefficient. (05 Mar 2000) |
| acupuncture anaesthesia | Insertion of acupuncture needles at specific points in the body to block the afferent nerve impulses from reaching the brain, thus producing the loss of sensation of pain. The technique is used in performing surgery. (12 Dec 1998) |
| ambulatory anaesthesia | Anaesthesia provided on an outpatient basis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| anaesthesia | <anaesthetics, neurology> The loss of feeling or sensation. Although the term is used for loss of tactile sensibility or of any of the other senses, it is applied especially to loss of the sensation of pain, as it is induced to permit performance of surgery or other painful procedures. Origin: Gr. Aisthesis = sensation (13 Nov 1997) |
| anaesthesia adjuvants | Agents that are administered in association with anaesthetics to increase effectiveness, improve delivery, or decrease required dosage. (12 Dec 1998) |
