| 설명 | 넓은 뜻으로는 I형, II형, III형 및 IV형의 알레르기 반응에 의해서 생기는 모든 병을 가리킨다. 그러나 보통 알레르기병이라고 하면 좁은 뜻을 가리키는 경우가 많고, I형의 알레르기반응에 의해서 생기는 것을 가리킨다. 즉 아토피병과 마찬가지 뜻으로 해석되는 경우가 많고, 기관지천식, 알레르기코염, 알레르기점막염, 두드러기, 아나필락시스 등이 여기에 속한다. |

| 설명 | 퇴행성 뇌병. 노인에서의 치매의 원인 중 가장 흔한 형태이다. 병리조직학적으로는 뇌의 전반적인 위축, 뇌실의 확장, 신경섬유의 다발성 병터(신경섬유뒤틀림)와 노인반(neuritic plaque) 등이 특징이다. 임상적인 특징은 점진적인 기억-판단-언어능력 등 지적인 기능의 감퇴와 일상생활능력-인격-행동양상의 장애이다. 병에 걸리면 초기에는 이름-날짜-장소와 같은 것들이 기억에서 사라지고, 심해지면 화장실을 가거나 요리를 하거나 신을 신는 일 등의 일상생활조차도 잊게 된다. 동시에 우울증세나 인격의 황폐, 격한 행동 등의 정신의학적인 증세도 동반된다. 이러한 증세들이 점전적으로 진행되어 결국은 죽음에 이르게 된다. 발병 후 서서히 죽음에 이르는 기간은 6~8년 정도이지만 사람에 따라 20년이 넘는 경우도 있다. |

| 설명 | 부신겉질의 병터로 인하여 부신겉질의 호르몬이 나오지 못해서 생기는 병. 우리나라에서 가장 많은 원인은 결핵이다. 애디슨병에서는 부신겉질의 파괴에 의해서 부신겉질에서 나오는 호르몬이 없어지므로 콩팥에서 물의 흡수장애로 인해 탈수상태가 지속되며, 스트레스 호르몬의 결핍에 의해서 만성피로, 체중감소 등의 증상이 생기며, 뇌하수체에서 부신겉질의 분비를 높이는 부신겉질자극호르몬의 과다 분비로 인해서 같이 분비되는 멜라닌자극호르몬에 의해 얼굴과 입술에 과도한 색소의 침착을 볼 수 있다. |

| 설명 | 위장관을 침범하는 정확한 원인이 밝혀지지 않은 만성적인 염증성 질환을 말한다. 크게 ‘궤양성 대장염’(ulcerative colitis)과 ‘크론병’(Crohn's disease)의 두 종류로 구분된다. 백인, 유태인에 많고 흑인이나 동양인에는 드물지만 동양인에서 점차 증가추세에 있다. 호발연령은 15~35세 사이이다. 증상은 ‘궤양성 대장염’의 경우, 설사(혈변 및 점액변), 뒤무직, 복통, 복부압통, 체중감소 등이 주로 나타나며 ‘크론병’에서는 설사와 체중감소, 우하복부 종류, 항문주위 이상, 복부압통 등이 나타난다. 진단은 병력과 방사선학적 검사, 직장경 및 대장 내시경검사, 직장 및 대장의 조직검사로 하며 치료는 내과적인 치료가 원칙이나 내과적 치료에 듣지 않거나 합병증이 생길 경우에는 외과적 치료를 시행한다. ‘궤양성 대장염’의 경우에는 ‘대장암’을 예방하기 위해서 외과적 치료를 하기도 한다. ‘궤양성 대장염’과 ‘크론 병’외에 염증성 창자병에 속하는 ‘베체트 병’은 재발성 구강내 궤양, 피부 병변, 안구부 염증, 외음부 궤양, 관절염 증상, 위창자관 증상(복통, 장출혈), 부고환염 등의 증상을 나타내는데 진단과 치료는 ‘궤양성 대장염’, ‘크론 병’과 비슷하다. |

| 설명 | 간이나 뇌에 구리가 비정상적으로 쌓여 일어나는 유전성 대사병. 간경화증이나 신경 증상이 따르는데, 손 떨림이나 언어 장애가 생기고 눈의 각막 주위에 녹갈색 고리가 나타난다. 영국의 신경과 의사 윌슨(Wilson)이 분류한 병이다. 보통염색체 열성으로 유전된다. 한국에서도 현재까지 50여 예가 보고되어 있다. 이병은 보통염색체 열성으로 유전되며, ATP7B라는 윌슨병 유전자가 13번 염색체에 위치한다. 특징으로 구리가 간, 뇌 및 각막에 축적하여 만성 간염 또는 간경화와 같은 간손상을 일으키고, 뇌 특히 렌즈핵의 퇴행 변화와 각막모서리에 녹갈색의 Kayser-Fleischer 고리를 형성한다. 임상증상의 발현은 보통 5~15세에 시작하는데 30~40세가 되도록 증상이 없을 수도 있다. |

| alcoholic liver disease | <gastroenterology> Alcoholic cirrhosis is a condition of irreversible liver disease due to the chronic inflammatory and toxic effects of ethanol on the liver. In cirrhosis, the liver cells are replaced by fibrous scar tissue. Fibrosis leads to the development of portal hypertension. The development of cirrhosis is directly related to the duration and quantity of alcohol consumption. | aleutian mink disease | A slow progressive disease of mink caused by the aleutian mink disease virus. It is characterised by poor reproduction, weight loss, autoimmunity, hypergammaglobulinaemia, increased susceptibility to bacterial infections, and death from renal failure. | altitude disease | A condition that results from prolonged exposure to high altitude. Symptoms include a continuous dry cough, shortness of breath, poor exercise tolerance, dizziness, headache, sleep difficulty, anorexia, confusion, fatigue and a rapid pulse. | alzheimer disease | A degenerative organic mental disease characterised by progressive brain deterioration and dementia. The disease was originally described as dementia, presenile occurring in persons under the age of 65 (as opposed to dementia, senile with onset at or after 65); however, onset may occur at any age. There is no pathophysiological nor clinical distinction between the two stages of onset of alzheimer's. Women appear to be affected twice as frequently as men. | Alzheimer's disease | <disease> A progressive, neurodegenerative disease characterised by loss of function and death of nerve cells in several areas of the brain leading to loss of cognitive function such as memory and language. The cause of nerve cell death is unknown but the cells are recognised by the appearance of unusual helical protein filaments in the nerve cells (neurofibrillary tangles) and by degeneration in cortical regions of brain, especially frontal and temporal lobes.
