cardiac catheterization A procedure that involves passage of a catheter through a blood vessel (artery) into the heart in order to obtain blood samples and take pressure readings within the heart. Radiopaque (an X-ray visible dye) is injected in order to record he flow through the heart and across the heart valves. This procedure usually includes coronary angiography.
