a benign, encapsulated, slow-growing, painless salivary gland tumor of intercalated duct or reserve cell origin, occurring mainly in males, in the parotid gland or upper lip; solid, canalicular, trabecular-tubular, and membranous types can be distinguished histologically, but all show little myoepithelial cell participation and little stromal differentiation or metaplasia.

| basal cell c. |
the most common form of skin cancer, consisting of an epithelial tumor of the skin originating from neoplastic differentiation of basal cells, rarely metastatic but locally invasive and aggressive; it usually occurs as one or several small, pearly nodules or plaques with central depressions on the face of an older adult, particularly on a sun-exposed area of persons with fair skin. It has been divided into numerous and variable subtypes on the basis of clinical and histological characteristics; the more constant subtypes include nodulo-ulcerative, morphea-like, cystic, and superficial.
