alteration in the direction of the mean QRS complex vector, determined from the electrocardiogram; it may be due to alteration in the anatomical position of the heart or to any of a variety of disorders such as ventricular hypertrophy or bundle branch block. Relative to the hexaxial reference system (q.v.), a normal axis is -30° to 90°; right axis deviation is 90° to 180°; left axis deviation is -30° to -90°; and -90° to 180° is an indeterminate axis.
