a severe form of measles occurring after exposure to wild measles virus in those who previously received inactivated (killed) measles vaccine, which was only available in the United States from 1963 to 1967, and in some cases live attenuated measles vaccine. It is characterized by fever, headache, myalgia, abdominal symptoms, and cough, followed by an atypical rash, which may be urticarial, vesicular, petechial, or maculopapular, on the wrists and ankles, and spreading to the palms, soles, and trunk before fading, and may be associated with peripheral edema, interstitial pulmonary infiltrates, and pleural effusion. Koplik spots are absent.
