| first heart sound | Occurs with ventricular systole and is mainly produced by closure of the atrioventricular valves. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|---|
| fourth heart sound | The sound produced in late diastole in association with ventricular filling due to atrial systole and related to reduced ventricular compliance. It is a low frequency oscillation that may be normal at older ages owing to a physiologic decline in ventricular compliance but is nearly always abnormal at younger ages if it is of high intensity or palpable. It is common in ventricular hypertrophy, particularly with hypertension, and is almost invariable during acute myocardial infarction. Fourth heart sounds may arise from the right or left ventricle or both. Synonym: atrial sound. (05 Mar 2000) |
| friction sound | The sound, heard on auscultation, made by the rubbing of two opposed serous surfaces roughened by an inflammatory exudate, or, if chronic, by nonadhesive fibrosis. Synonym: friction murmur, friction rub. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Le Fort sound | A curved sound threaded for a filiform bougie, used for dilation of urethral strictures in the male when small caliber or presence of false passages prevents safe passage of a standard sound or catheter. (05 Mar 2000) |
| arrhythmias, atrial | Abnormal heart rhythm due to electrical disturbances in the atria (the upper chambers of the heart) or the AV node relay station , leading to fast heart beats. Examples of atrial arrhythmias includes atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, and paroxysmal atrial tachycardia (PAT). (12 Dec 1998) |
| atrial | <anatomy> Pertaining to an atrium. (16 Dec 1997) |
| atrial appendage | The small projection from each atrium hanging over like a small ear, more marked on the left, with a small cavity of its own. (05 Mar 2000) |
| atrial arrhythmias | See Arrhythmias, atrial. (12 Dec 1998) |
| atrial arteries | Branches of the right and left coronary arteries distributed to the muscle of the atria. Synonym: arteriae atriales. (05 Mar 2000) |
| atrial auricle | The auricle of atrium. See: left atrium, right atrium. (05 Mar 2000) |
| atrial auricula | A small conical ("ear-shaped") pouch projecting from the upper anterior portion of each atrium of the heart, increasing slightly the atrial volume. See: auricle of left atrium, auricle of right atrium. Synonym: auricula atrialis, atrial auricle, atrial auricula, auricle, auricula, auricular appendage, auricular appendix, skin tag. (05 Mar 2000) |
| atrial bigeminy | Pairing of atrial beats, as when an atrial extrasystole is coupled to each sinus beat. (05 Mar 2000) |
| atrial branches | The atrial branches, the branches of the right coronary artery and the circumflex branch of the left coronary artery distributed to the right and left atrium, respectively. Synonym: rami atriales. (05 Mar 2000) |
| atrial capture beat | The cardiac cycle resulting when, after a period of A-V dissociation, the atria regain control of the ventricles; atrial depolarisation due to retrograde transmission from a ventricular ectopic beat or an electronically paced ventricular impulse. (05 Mar 2000) |
| atrial chaotic tachycardia | Multifocal origin of tachycardia within the atrium; often confused with atrial fibrillation during physical examination. (05 Mar 2000) |
