atopic d. a chronic type seen in those with a hereditary susceptibility to pruritus; it may be accompanied by allergic rhinitis, hay fever, and asthma. The extreme pruritus often leads to scratching and rubbing that in turn results in the typical lesions of eczema. In infants (infantile eczema), it usually occurs on the cheeks and then may extend to other areas; in older children and adults it is found chiefly on the flexural surfaces (flexural eczema), especially on the antecubital and popliteal areas, and on the neck, eyelids, and wrists and behind the ears. Called also allergic d., allergic or atopic eczema, and Besnier's prurigo.
