adenocarcinoma A more rare cancer affecting the cervix, but involving the columnar cells rather than the squamous cells. The columnar cells are the cells that are involved in glandular activity. Adenocarcinoma has a different type and rate of progression and is not so often picked up in Pap smears. Women who have regular Pap smears and who still develop cervical cancer are often affected by this type of cancer rather than squamous cell carcinoma.
